July Cancer Awareness Month: Sarcoma & Bone Cancer Awareness
Every year, July is observed as Sarcoma and Bone Cancer Awareness Month to increase public awareness about these rare cancers. Since sarcomas are uncommon, their symptoms are often overlooked, resulting in delayed diagnosis and treatment. Raising awareness helps people recognize the warning signs and seek timely medical care.
What Is Sarcoma?
Sarcoma is a rare cancer that develops in the body's connective tissues, including bones, muscles, fat, cartilage, tendons, blood vessels, and nerves. There are more than 70 different subtypes of sarcoma, broadly classified into:
- Soft Tissue Sarcoma
- Bone Sarcoma
What Is Bone Cancer?
Primary bone cancer begins in the bones themselves and is relatively rare. It differs from cancers that spread to the bones from other organs. Common types include:
- Osteosarcoma
- Ewing Sarcoma
- Chondrosarcoma
Bone cancers are more common among children, teenagers, and young adults, although some types occur in older adults.
Signs and Symptoms
Consult a healthcare professional if any of the following symptoms persist:
- Persistent bone or soft tissue pain
- Swelling or an unexplained lump
- Pain that worsens at night
- Difficulty moving a limb or joint
- Bone fractures after minor injury
- Fatigue and unexplained weight loss
Risk Factors
Although anyone can develop sarcoma, certain factors may increase the risk:
- Previous radiation therapy
- Inherited genetic conditions
- Chronic lymphedema
- Exposure to certain industrial chemicals
- Some bone diseases such as Paget's disease
However, many patients have no identifiable risk factors.
Diagnosis
Doctors may use the following investigations to diagnose sarcoma:
- Physical examination
- X-ray
- MRI Scan
- CT Scan
- PET Scan (when required)
- Biopsy (confirmatory test)
Treatment
Treatment depends on the type, stage, and location of the cancer. Options include:
- Surgery
- Chemotherapy
- Radiation Therapy
- Targeted Therapy
- Immunotherapy (selected cases)
- Rehabilitation and supportive care
Can It Be Prevented?
There is no proven way to completely prevent sarcoma. However, early detection greatly improves treatment outcomes. Never ignore a growing lump, persistent bone pain, or unexplained swelling.
How You Can Help
- Learn about sarcoma and bone cancer.
- Share awareness messages during July.
- Support patients and survivors.
- Encourage early medical evaluation of suspicious symptoms.
- Promote regular health check-ups.
July Cancer Awareness Month reminds us that rare cancers like sarcoma and bone cancer deserve attention. Awareness, early diagnosis, and timely treatment can save lives. If you or someone you know experiences persistent pain, swelling, or an unusual lump, seek medical advice without delay.
Spread Awareness. Encourage Early Diagnosis. Save Lives.
