Completing a BHMS degree can leave many graduates feeling uncertain about their next steps. However, a range of opportunities awaits qualified Homeopathy practitioners, from clinical roles to academic careers.

    Career Paths After BHMS

With a BHMS degree, you can work as a medical officer in government or private Homeopathic hospitals and dispensaries. You may also choose to start your own clinic, or pursue a career in research and become a research scientist. For those interested in teaching, an MD in Homoeopathy is essential.

    Pursuing MD (Homoeopathy)

The MD (Homoeopathy) is a three-year postgraduate program offering specializations in seven areas:

    1. Practice of Medicine

    2. Pediatrics

    3. Psychiatry

    4. Organon of Medicine

    5. Materia Medica

    6. Homoeopathic Pharmacy

    7. Case Taking & Repertory

    Why Pursue an MD Degree?

Studying for a master’s degree can be an exciting and rewarding step in your career. Key reasons to consider an MD include:

    - Advancing your current career path

    - Enhancing job prospects

    - Developing personal interests

    - Progressing to a Ph.D. or higher qualification

    - Entering a specialized profession

    - Meeting the requirements of a current job role

While obtaining a master’s degree can be costly, time-consuming, and demanding, it offers significant long-term benefits.

Key Considerations Before Pursuing an MD (Homoeopathy)

If you plan to pursue an MD to build a teaching career, consider these factors carefully:

    Choosing the Right College

In India, MD (Homoeopathy) is offered by 19 government colleges (425 seats), 2 government-aided colleges (27 seats), 4 National Institutes (80 seats), and 53 private colleges (1232 seats). Government colleges generally have lower fees and offer monthly stipends, making them a more affordable option. Your choice of college will depend on your All India Ayush Post Graduate Entrance Test (AIAPGET) - 2024 marks.

Selecting the Right Specialization for Teaching

The seven MD specializations are not equal in terms of teaching career opportunities. Depending on your career goals, these specializations can be divided into two groups:

Group I (Core Homoeopathy subjects): Organon of Medicine, Materia Medica, Homoeopathic Pharmacy, Repertory, Practice of Medicine.

Group II (Exclusive PG subjects): Pediatrics and Psychiatry.

Group I specializations are taught in both undergraduate (UG) and postgraduate (PG) colleges, providing broader job opportunities across India’s 279 UG and 84 PG Homoeopathy colleges.

Group II specializations, however, are limited to PG colleges offering those specialities, narrowing your job prospects. Or you will in a situation to join in a non clinical / non PG subjects like Anatomy, Physiology, Pathology, Forensic Medicine, Surgery, OBG, Community Medicine etc.,

    Teaching Career Scope

Group I Specializations: Offer opportunities to work as a teacher in both UG and PG colleges, with potential for promotion to PG faculty or guide roles or even Principal, Director etc.,

Group II Specializations: Limits you to teaching only in PG colleges offering Pediatrics or Psychiatry, and may restrict transfers to other UG institutions.

If you choose Group II specializations, you may end up working as an assistant professor in pre-clinical or UG subjects (Anatomy, Physiology, Forensic Medicine, etc.) due to the specific teaching eligibility criteria set by the National Commission of Homoeopathy (NCH).

    Final Thoughts

Choosing the right MD specialization is crucial, especially if you aspire to teach. Group I subjects provide flexibility and broader opportunities, while Group II subjects may limit your options to specific PG roles.
