Scholarships for Physically Disabled Students
Physically disabled also known as differently-abled students face many barriers in life like physical, financial, psychological, and mental in pursuing studies and living with dignity in society. These students are deprived of harnessing their hidden skills and hence very often miss the opportunity to earn their livelihood and find a dignified place for themselves in the society.
Both state and central government and private funded organizations encourages disabled students by providing them financial support in the form scholarship and encourages to pursue professional or technical courses and various skill development courses for their empowerment. Notifications for application for these scholarships are published in newspapers and official website of the organisation.

National Handicapped Finance and Development Corporation Scholarship Scheme
This scholarship scheme provides financial support to the physically disabled students to enable them to pursue professional and technical courses from recognized institutes. Under this scheme 2500 scholarships are provided to every year. 30% of scholarships under this scheme are reserved for girls. Financial support only will be provided to pursue degree or post graduate level technical and professional courses from a recognized institution. Maintenance, stationary allowance and grant for purchase of assistive devices will be credited to the selected student’s account.
Scholarship will be awarded only for one course at a time. Students who get admission to a college to pursue technical or professional courses, on the basis of a competitive examination will be eligible for the scholarship. Scholarships for disabled persons will be available to Indian students with at least 40% disabilities certified as per definition under Persons with Disabilities Act 1995. For the students with disabilities of Cerebral Palsy, Mental Retardation, Multiple Disabilities, and Profound or Severe Hearing Impaired, the minimum educational qualification is class VIII pass and scholarship will be awarded to them for pursuing general, technical, professional courses. Continuation of the scholarship for next year will depend on successfully completing the course in previous year with minimum 50 percent marks. Monthly family income of the applicant should not be more than Rs. 15,000/-.
Rajiv Gandhi Scholarship for Disabled Students
The National Centre for Promotion of Employment for Disabled People (NCPEDP) provides scholarships to 42 disabled students on the birth anniversary of Rajiv Gandhi.
The selected students are disabled students chosen from various parts of the country, pursuing diverse careers. Each individual student is different from the other as his career interests, but they all face an uncertain future in the world of employment.
This programme reduces the financial barriers of education but it cannot provide a complete solution to disabled student’s problems. This scholarship heels emotions of frustrated students.
Gyan Prabha Scholarship for the Physically Challenged
Gyan Prabha Scholarship is provided by the National Trust. National Trust is an autonomous organisation of the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment. National Trust works specially for the welfare of persons with Autism, Cerebral Palsy, Mental Retardation and Multiple Disabilities.
National Trust launched Gyan Prabha Scholarship only for the disables in India. The main goal of Gyan Prabha Scholarship is to encourage people with various disabilities like Autism, Cerebral Palsy, Mental Retardation and Multiple Disabilities to pursue various courses. Courses may be both professional and vocational as they may like it.
The scholarship not only provides financial support, it aims at the enhancement of their talent, skills and potential. The Gyan Prabha Scholarship aims at enabling disables to live a dignified life with equal opportunities. It makes them a part of the mainstream development. Gyan Prabha Scholarship helps the persons with disabilities to pursue college education.
The students with Autism, Cerebral Palsy, Mental Retardation and other Multiple Disabilities are eligible for the scholarship. It is specially given to those who cannot afford to pursue professional courses or some vocational courses and are from weak family background. This scholarship is also provided to those who want to enhance their skills so that they may be able to get themselves self employed or are able to get jobs in public or private sector. Gyan Prabha Scholarship is granted to pursue one course only.
