AYUSH Advisory for Public Preparedness Against El Niño Health Impacts

    article
The Ministry of AYUSH, Government of India, has released a comprehensive advisory to help the public prepare for the health challenges associated with El Niño. Extreme weather events linked to El Niño, including heatwaves, droughts, floods, and irregular rainfall, can significantly affect public health by increasing the risk of heat-related illnesses, respiratory disorders, vector-borne diseases, water-borne infections, and mental stress.

    Major Health Risks

    • Heat stress, heat exhaustion, dehydration, and heat stroke.
    • Increased incidence of dengue, malaria, chikungunya, and other vector-borne diseases.
    • Water-borne diseases due to contaminated water following floods and water scarcity.
    • Respiratory illnesses caused by wildfire smoke, dust, and poor air quality.
    • Mental health issues such as stress, anxiety, sleep disturbances, and emotional distress.

    Recommended Preventive Measures

    • Avoid direct sun exposure, especially between 12:00 PM and 3:00 PM.
    • Drink plenty of safe water and maintain adequate hydration.
    • Consume freshly prepared, nutritious food and avoid stale or unhygienic meals.
    • Maintain personal hygiene and ensure proper sanitation.
    • Keep surroundings clean to prevent mosquito breeding.
    • Practice seasonal AYUSH lifestyle measures, including appropriate diet, Yoga, and Pranayama.

    Protect Vulnerable Groups

Extra care should be taken for children, older adults, pregnant and lactating women, outdoor workers, and individuals with chronic illnesses. They should remain well-hydrated, avoid excessive heat exposure, and seek medical attention promptly if symptoms develop.

When to Seek Immediate Medical Care

Seek urgent medical attention if you experience persistent vomiting, severe dehydration, difficulty breathing, altered consciousness, convulsions, or any rapidly worsening illness. AYUSH interventions should complement, not replace, emergency medical care.

    Conclusion

The Ministry of AYUSH emphasizes that preparedness, healthy lifestyle practices, and timely medical intervention can substantially reduce the health impacts of El Niño. Following the advisory can help individuals and communities stay safe and resilient during extreme weather conditions.
