The Ministry of Railways and the Ministry of Ayush (MoA) signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to augment the Ayush system services in the railways zonal hospitals in New Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai and Guwahati, a statement from the railways said.

This means that these hospitals will now have both ayurvedic and homoeopathic medicines as well as practitioners available for consultation in the outpatient departments (OPDs).

According to the MoU, the MoA will provide technical know-how regarding these medicines and guidelines on manpower requirement to the railways.

It will also help the railways in providing initial training to the Ayush doctors, newly recruited for the railway hospitals, while the ministry of railways will arrange logistics and infrastructure, the statement said.

Speaking on the occasion, Minister of State, Railways, Manoj Sinha said ensuring the wellness of the railway employees was of prime concern.

"The traditional knowledge of the Ayush systems can be harnessed to particularly help the vast majority of railway staff, who are required to put in stressful field duties on site," he said.

Presently, the Indian Railways is running 126 homoeopathy and 40 ayurveda clinics through its Staff Benefit Fund under the Welfare Section of Establishment Directorate.
