Database of all Health Establishment to be available online

    news
In the next two years, database of almost all health establishments — approximately 30 lakh — whether it is in private or Government sector or be it allopathic or Indian traditional medical system spread across the country will be available online with interactive maps.

Aiming to improve health outcomes and create health database, the Union Health Ministry will soon roll out a two-year-long massive exercise to map all public and private healthcare establishments at the district level in the country. This is the first ever healthcare establishment census, using paperless technology.

To begin with, the National Health Resource Repository (NHRR) pilot project under the aegis of Central Bureau Health Intelligence (CBHI) of the Health Ministry’s DGHS has already initiated in Hamirpur, Rangareddy, Sikkim, Rajkot and Jodhpur for six months in collaboration with the World Health Organisation (WHO) to be later spread out across the country in phased manner.

A senior Health Ministry official elaborated that the project will create a web-based and geo-mapping enabled single platform of all the health resources both government and private which inter-alia includes, hospitals, diagnostic labs, doctors and pharmacies etc.
She said that it will comprise of the data on health infrastructure, human resource and the availability and type  of medical facilities such as allopathy, ayurveda, unani, siddha and homeopathy (excluding yoga, naturopathy and SOWA- RIGPA), in each health establishment in the country.

The importance of health mapping lies in the production of interactive and published maps that would link the geography of communities with other dimensions such as availability and accessibility of health services, or disease prevention and control services particularly in rural areas, added an official from the WHO.

In this regard, the CBHI has inked a pact with the Indian Satellite Research Organisation (ISRO)/National Remote Sensing Centre (NRSC)  for design and development of geo- web portal and mobile app to address geo- tagging, geo visualization and spatial analysis of all health care setups to place healthcare assets of the country on Bhuvan platform.

The NRSC has a well-demonstrated platform “Bhuvan Geoportal” to support such programs. Bhuvan is an open source WebGIS platform that has diverse capabilities of using online GIS facilities for developmental planning and monitoring of national level projects. This platform has already hosted customised GIS software solutions and large amount of data for many government programmes/projects that are operationally used.

Approximately 25 lakh Enumeration Blocks (EB) across the country based on Census 2011, will be covered during the exercise.
