Manipur Adopts Project Belladona 200 to Prevent JE Outbreak

The number of cases of Japanese Encephalitis detected in Manipur this year has reached 31 as four new cases were confirmed on Tuesday (02-08-2016). Officials said that 22 blood samples were collected and tested in Imphal, of which four turned out to be positive. Two were from Imphal West and one each from Churachandpur and Imphal East districts.

In view of the recent outbreak, the Directorate of AYUSH is all set for Project Belladonna 200 for the preventive support of the viral disease. Interacting with the media, state Health commissioner PK Singh stated that though the gravity of the outbreak of the viral disease is of serious concern, the situation is under control and there is no need to panic about the outbreak of the disease. He further stated that there is no need for mass vaccination as of now and fogging is one of the best options to control the outbreak. He also appealed to the people to maintain cleanliness around their houses so as to prevent breeding of the culex mosquitoes which are the carriers of the disease.

Singh further stated that the directorate of AYUSH is supplementing the health system in the state in controlling the outbreak of Japanese Encephalitis and Project Belladonna 200 is one such step taken up by the directorate for preventive support of the viral disease. Talking about the launch of Project Belladonna 200, AYUSH director, Dr K Lokendro Singh said that Homoeopathy is a system of Medicine which is recognized by the Ministry of AYUSH, Government of India. He added that Homoeopathic Prophylaxis can be successfully adopted in the state citing various researches validated by both National and International platforms. Dr Lokendro further informed that an official team of Directorate of AYUSH is visiting Churachandpur tomorrow to take stock of the outbreak of Japanese Encephalitis and to distribute Belladonna 200 medicine to the public through the Medical Superintendent of the Churachandpur District Hospital.

The homoeopathic medicine Belladonna 200, which is an extract from belladonna plants, has been proved to be an effective prophylactic in Japanese Encephalitis outbreaks. Japanese Encephalitis, also popularly known as “Brain Fever” is a viral disease affecting the central nervous system of the human body. The disease is transmitted from pigs and aquatic birds to humans by the bite of infected female culex mosquitoes. The disease is more susceptible to children of 3-15 years and old ages, however it does not spread directly from a person to another.
