AYUSH Department gets Minister of State (Independent Charge)
New Delhi: With an eye on reviving indigenous and
traditional medicine, Prime Minister Narendra Modi today earmarked a
Minister of State (Independent Charge) to look after Department of
Ayurveda, Yoga and Naturopathy, Unani, Siddha and Homeopathy (AYUSH).
Shripad
Yesso Naik has been made Minister of State (Independent Charge) for
Ayush, said a communique issued by Rashtrapati Bhavan.
Earlier,
the Department was under the ambit of the Health Minister, under whose
ministry it functioned. The move came after Modi effected a Cabinet
reshuffle.
AYUSH, is a governmental body in
India purposed with developing education and research in ayurveda
(Indian traditional medicine), yoga, naturopathy, unani, siddha, and
homoeopathy, and other alternative medicine systems.
Created in
March 1995 as the Department of Indian Systems of Medicine and
Homoeopathy (ISM&H), AYUSH received its current name in March 2003.
