AYUSH AIIMS to be set up in Goa

    news
PANAJI : An Institute of Naturopathy and All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS)
entirely dedicated to five branches of alternate medicine namely ayurveda, yoga and naturopathy, unani, siddha and homoeopathy were announced for Goa on the occasion of completion of one year of the Narendra Modi-led Bharatiya Janata Party government at the Centre.

Coming out with this announcement, Minister of State for AYUSH (independent charge) Shripad Naik on Tuesday said that the state government has assured land for the Institute of Naturopathy in Pernem, while the land for AYUSH AIIMS still remains to be identified. “We have already requested the Union Health Ministry to allow us change the branch of medicine for AIIMS proposed in Goa, from allopathic medicine to other alternate forms of medicine,” he added, informing that the AYUSH AIIMS in Goa will also have other facilities including research.

Naik, who was interacting with the media along with South Goa MP Narendra Sawaikar and state BJP president Vinay Tendulkar at the city BJP headquarters said that his ministry has directed all the state governments in the country to set up AYUSH directorates, and provide services of alternate medicine at the primary health centres along with allopathic medicine. “In Goa, the government has already created posts of 52 AYUSH doctors, besides that of the director of AYUSH,” he noted, maintaining that the Ministry for AYUSH desires to run health tourism in Goa by following the Kerala model.

Speaking further, Naik said that during his earlier tenure as the Minister for Tourism in the Modi government, he was able to sanction 3-4 projects amounting Rs 100 crore for Goa. “The Institute of Hotel Management and Catering Technology at Farmagudi is one such project costing Rs 28 crore and work for the same is in progress,” he said, pointing out that another Rs 42-crore project at Miramar pertains to water sports and the work for the same will be completed in six months’ time. It was also informed that yet another such project is the construction of a passenger terminal building at Mormugao Port Trust, Vasco, costing Rs 8.79 crore.

The Minister of State for AYUSH (independent charge) said that the Modi government has successfully auctioned the coal blocks, which were not auctioned during the previous regime thus causing losses to the country’s exchequer. “This auction has brought in revenue of Rs 2 lakh crore in the Indian treasury,” he added.

Replying to a related question, Naik agreed that auctioning of Goan mining leases on the lines of coal blocks could have made the exchequer of the state government richer. “Here in Goa, the mining extraction and transportation are carried out by private players, and therefore, auctioning of the mining leases could be introduced here,” he stated, maintaining that he would speak with the state government on the particular issue.

Answering another query, the Minister of State for AYUSH (independent charge) said that the construction of Ram Mandir in Ayodhya is not the job of the Modi government. “There are organisations, which can undertake the construction of this temple, and the government, taking into consideration the public sentiments related to this issue, could support such organisations in this national mission,” he observed, maintaining that the particular issue is sub judice, even though 60 per cent of the related problems including demarcation of land for the temple are over.

Replying to yet another question, Naik said that the committee set up to examine the controversial ‘Putrajeevak Beej,’ an ayurvedic product, which promises a male child, as produced by yoga guru Baba Ramdev’s pharmacy, is yet to submit its report. He also said that the ayurvedic product takes its name from an herb, and the same could be traced back to the ancient scriptures.

It may be recalled that the particular product courted controversy when Rajya Sabha lawmakers led by JD(U)’s KC Tyagi demanded a ban on the product, which he claimed promises the birth of a male child and sought stringent action against the manufacturer.

Naik also stated that the Congress government had even failed to constitute a Special Investigation Team as directed by the Supreme Court to probe black money abroad. “The BJP government at the Centre constituted the team within a day of coming to power, and linked activities such as obtaining list of people with black money abroad and the related amount, have already begun,” he informed, noting that the results would soon start appearing.

The Minister of State for AYUSH (independent charge) also spoke about the achievements of the Modi government during its first year in power, and cited various public welfare schemes of the government. A report of the performance of the Modi government was also released on the occasion.
